Applications of Micro credit - some SAMUHA examples of social and economic profits

· The SAMUHA Grain Bank is presently operational in 9 villages under the Tawargera MACS. These Grain Banks have demonstrated people's capabilities to cope with emergencies, as long as they have a reliable safety net. Despite the 3rd year of drought, repayments are at 100%.
· Amrutamma a member of the Maulaleshwara SHG from Kilarahatti Village started a bangle business with a loan of Rs 2000 from her SHG. Today, she caters to customers from far-flung areas like Rampur, Todaki, Kilarahatti Tanda and Kumarakheda, as well as selling her products at the local shandies.
· In Dondamballi village in the Deodurg taluk, the Jyothi SHG used its resources to set up a Flour Mill. They now run this successfully, and have capitalized on both its profits and their experience to add a Chilli Pounding Machine also.
· In Kalapanna Tanda Village, 100 members altogether took 10 loans under the SJSRY scheme to drill Bore wells for community irrigation through bank linkages through 3 SHG's. This has helped them harvest bumper crops, despite the prevailing drought, and maintain 100% loan repayment.
· In Piklihall village, in the Naglapur Gram Panchayat in Lingsugur taluk, 95% of the women in the village are members of the 10 SHG's here. These members decided to fight the menace of drinking, and took on the might of the arrack vendor. They were successful, and have eliminated the sale of the liquor in the village.
· Adivibhavi village, in the Kushtagi taluk, is located 7-8 km from the main road. This stretch is not a motorable road. The Government Transport Corporation refused to ply a bus to their village, till the road was made motorable. The 5 SHG's here and the Gram Samastha (the village institution) jointly organized a "shramdan", and built a motorable road out of their own resources. Today, the village is connected to the outside world through 2 daily bus services.
· In the Kanakagiri area, 5 SHG's have started to fund members to undertake seed production on contract from large companies. This business initiative has helped several families to increase their income since this is a non-traditional business and offers good scope for continuous and consistent returns.
