With
long term sustainability in mind, SAMUHA
PLAN phased out its feeding and teacher support components
in its Bal Kendra programme.
ICDS centres functioning in the project area
are now supported through Anganwadi workers/ayah trainings,
supply of play materials, creation of play space, and ICDS
building extensions. The programme supplements with ICDS centres
wherever they exist.
Interactions with the Women and Child Welfare
department have also helped identify various problems faced
by ICDS centres / workers, and how these can be addressed
so that the children ultimately benefit.
Highlights
2002
17 ICDS Centres Get
to Play :
Seventeen of the 28 ICDS centres in the Deodurg
project area have been provided with preschool play materials.
The package includes an indigenously produced 3-wheel walker
that will aid muscle growth in toddlers, a set of three wooden
jigsaw puzzles of animals and birds and three pull carts each.
Training Sessions in
Deodurg, Irkalgada :
Two training sessions held in Deodurg and Irkalgada
were attended by 47 ICDS workers. The Child Development Project
Officers (CDPO) of both taluks attended and provided inputs.
Colour for ICDS Centres!
Wall paintings for 15 ICDS centres were completed
this year. These included pictures of different vegetables,
fruits, animals, birds, flowers, colours, numbers and Kannada
language alphabets. Community and ICDS workers together contributed
10% of the painting expenses for their ICDS centres. These
were in the form of individual donations and payments for
paints and painters.

KEY
LEARNINGS:
In
addition to training of ICDS workers, training and involvement
of mothers ensures that the community takes ownership of the
programme.
Involvement
of the earlier Bal Kendra teachers ensures that learning inputs
provided to them continue to be of value.
For
effective implementation of the ECCD programme, child development
specialists need to provide periodical review and training
inputs.
IN
THE PIPELINE...
...
enhanced collaboration with the ICDS department.
...
linking of children's club activities with functions of ICDS.
...
specific activities to increase community awareness about
and involvement in the running of the centres.
| After attending this training for ICDS workers, I have
realised how much we have forgotten in all that had been
instilled in us during our initial training. I am sure
I will work more zealously with SAMUHA PLANs support.

SAMUHA PLAN believes that local community
participation ensures ownership and sustainability. As part
of the ICDS Supplementation programme, we trained a group
of ICDS workers to build community interest in the ICDS
centres. Sridevi, the Anganwadi teacher from Jambaldinni
village, successfully convinced the local community to pay
for the white-washing of the ICDS building. The project
subsequently provided this centre with wall paintings. Sridevi
believes, "If the community takes more interest in
child care, it makes our effort worthwhile.
